580th Anniversary of the Battle of Varna
The 580th anniversary of the Battle of Varna was commemorated at “Vladislav Varnenchik” Park-Museum, a branch of the National Museum of Military History, with a military ceremony, a memorial service, and the opening of the exhibition “Varna. The Last Battle.”
In her welcoming address, Deyana Kostova, Deputy Director of the National Museum of Military History, emphasised that the last crusade in the Balkans was part of a broader process that led to an awareness of our shared European identity. “It is part of the collective memory of peoples, which teaches us to fight for our values, remember those who gave their lives for them, and cherish peace,” she stressed.
Milen Dimov, Director of “Vladislav Varnenchik” Park-Museum, presented the exhibition “Varna. The Last Battle”, specially prepared for the occasion. Organised in partnership with the National Archaeological Institute with Museum at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, the Regional Museum of History – Ruse, the Regional Museum of History – Silistra, and the Regional Museum of History – Shumen, the exhibition will be on view until the end of January 2025.
The event was attended by Andriyana Andreeva, Regional Governor of Varna, Tsvetelina Atanasova, Deputy Chair of the Varna Municipal Council, Snezhana Apostolova, Deputy Mayor of Varna Municipality, and Captain First Rank Borislav Velikov, Commander of Varna Naval Base, representatives of the Polish and Hungarian communities, local authorities, commanders and heads of military units, military-patriotic unions, civil society organisations and fellow museum professionals. They laid wreaths and flowers at the mausoleum of King Władysław III and the monument to the Transylvanian voivode János Hunyadi.
